Quick Pickleball Knowledge Check

Try these questions, then open each answer to see Coach Tom’s explanation.

1. Can you volley while standing inside the non-volley zone (the kitchen)?

Show answer

No. You may enter the kitchen, but you cannot volley while touching it or its line. Your momentum after a volley must not carry you into the zone.

2. What score does a standard doubles game start with?

Show answer

0-0-2, in traditional side-out scoring.

3. What’s a useful ready position at the kitchen line?

Show answer

Balanced stance, knees comfortably bent, paddle in front, and attention on the ball.

4. Can a serve land in the opponent’s non-volley zone?

Show answer

No. The serve must clear the non-volley zone and its line and land in the diagonally opposite service court.

Choose a Practice Drill

Beginner: Ten Controlled Dinks

With a partner, rally softly at the non-volley-zone line. Try for ten consecutive controlled dinks. Prioritize balance and safe movement.

Intermediate: Return Deep, Then Recover

Alternate deep returns toward the middle third of the court. After each return, move forward under control toward a good ready position.

Advanced: Reset Under Pressure

Have a partner feed faster balls while you practice controlled soft resets into the kitchen. Focus on paddle angle and a compact swing.

Weekly Safety Challenge

Before your next session: warm up, check your footwear and court surface, consider protective eyewear, and agree to stop play when a hazard appears.

Weekly Pickleball Question — October 2026

When your opponent hits a fast ball at you while you’re near the kitchen line, what should you prioritize?

  1. A bigger backswing for more power
  2. A compact paddle movement and balanced position
  3. Turning away from the ball
Reveal Coach Tom’s answer

Answer: A compact paddle movement and balanced position. When you have little reaction time, keeping the paddle ready and the motion compact helps you control the return. Never sacrifice safety to reach an unsafe shot.
